Step 7: The Playlist

Just like a sequencer is how you arrange the notes, a playlist is how you arrange the patterns. The whole point of the patterns is to break the monotony of one beat. The whole point of the playlist is to organize these patterns in a way that you want them arranged. There isn't much to say about the playlist though. It's actually a quick and easy concept to grasp and the only reason it has its own section is to show you how my old style is arranged. Basically you have to realize that a block in the step sequencer does NOT mean thats the only part of your beat that will be played, but means that at that spot, your pattern has been cued. As of now, all of your patterns are only one block, so this concept does not yet apply. However, in this step, I will show you how it works.

Now I have to make a system for displaying playlists. So, here's how it will work... Firstly, all of the patterns will be lined up on the side. Just like the sequencer, I will use an "X" to show a spot with a pattern cue, and use a dash ("-") to show a spot without a pattern cue. By the way, I've placed names for the patterns beside them, just as reference for the producer. To put these names in for yourself in FruityLoops, simply right click on the pattern and an ediitng box will be displayed in which the title can be placed.

IMPORTANT: Everything will be broken down into four sets of four, and if it exceeds four sets of four, the next piece of it will be written below it, just so that it doesn't go so far off that you can no longer read it. Please remember that because it will apply to playlists and piano rolls.

The way this style works is to have a basic beat, a little break in the beat, the beat again, and a transition back to the beat. The full arrangement itself consists of an introduction, a basic beat, and a bit of a change on the beat, which was basically the addition of more hats. If you ask me, thats pretty good, isn't it? You know, just as a simple beat in all. Well, on with the tutorial. I promised to show you how the play list handles things that are longer than one block and to show you that that blocks in the play list are cues rather than the beats themselves. So, get a long string sample and make a channel for it. Set up your sample control so that it plays as long as the sequencer tells it to. Since it's a string, you may wanna set it a fade in value so it sounds soft. Now, we're going to make a basic four block pattern, then give it its own introduction in the playlist. For those of you who don't know how to add at the beginning of a playlist, I know that in FruityLoops, you click at the start of the playlist and press "Insert" to insert blank columns to make room for our new, longer introduction. If your sequencer isn't all pattern-based like FruityLoops (i.e. Reason), select the whole playlist with Ctrl+A (Select All) and move it. So, open pattern nine so that we can make our string pattern. Or, u can just replace the current one with the new one I made rather than making it longer. Please note that this pattern's first note is at C4, not C5.
